چکیده

We show that, contrary to common belief, free riding is indeed possible in BitTorrent. We present a BitTorrent client implementation in Java which successfully downloads shared files without ever contributing a single byte of user data to the network. Surprisingly, this client often achieves the same download speed as the original BitTorrent client. This client is of particular interest for people living in countries where sharing of copyrighted material is forbidden by law but acquiring it is legal, no matter from what source. We also present possible modifications of BitTorrent to effectively reduce free riding. The key concept is a strict tit for tat algorithm paired with ideas from network coding. The new scheme results in a robust, scalable and fair peer-to-peer file sharing system.

This proceeding deals with various attacks and exploitations P2P networks have to cope with. In the last few years BitTorrent became famous for spreading big amounts of data to many people in a short time. BitTorrent will therefore be the main focus of this work. This proceeding serves basically as overview about different types of attacks. It shows attacks that are able to prevent files from b...

On Analyzing Free-Riding Behavior in BitTorrent Communities

BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing systems in existence that has been able to attract millions of users. BitTorrent depends on global components for file search, engages a moderator system to guarantee the data integrity of file, and uses an exchange mechanism for file sharing in order to discourage users from free-riding. We conduct one of the largest measurement and a...

Counter Attack against Free-Riders: Filling a Security Hole in Bittorrent Protocol

eer-to-Peer(P2P) networks are powerful distributed solutions which do not rely on external servers and gather required resources from their users. Therefor fairness is an important feature for designers of these networks. To have a fair network we always want to prevent free-riding. One of the most important file-sharing protocols in P2P is Bittorrent. What separates Bittorrent from other P2P p...

Collaboration in BitTorrent Systems

Recent research efforts have shown that the popular BitTorrent protocol does not strictly enforce fairness and allows free-riding, mainly via optimistic unchokes. This paper proposes a BitTorrent-like protocol, that encourages peers of similar upload bandwidth to be buddies— peers collaborating for mutual benefit. Buddy peers mostly satisfy their download needs through their buddies and perform...

Foresighted Resource Reciprocation Strategy in BitTorrent Systems

Recent research efforts have shown that the popular Bit-Torrent protocol does not provide fair resource reciprocation and allows free-riding. In this paper, we propose a novel foresighted resource reciprocation mechanism that replaces the peer selection mechanism with a reinforcement learning mechanism that adopts a foresighted resource reciprocation policy. We model the peer interactions in th...
